Self Care: Part 1

First of all, I hope everyone had a very Merry Christmas and is having a great New Year’s Eve! This is the time of the year when many people resolve to be better next year. New year, new you, new resolution broken.  According to U.S. News, approximately 80% of resolutions fail by the second week of February. In a survey by Statista, 53 percent of respondents said their resolution for 2018 is to save money, while 45 percent would like to lose weight or get in shape.

Both admirable resolutions. This is why banks and gyms are always running specials in January. December always seems to be filled with excess food and spending for me as well, so I get this. Eat right, get in shape, and break the bad habits that have been formed over the course of a lifetime. Unfortunately, it’s not that easy.

Life doesn’t slow down. This would be easier if we didn’t have a false illusion that life will slow down in January. Meal planning becomes the main source of these two goals. If we plan ahead and can find reasonably priced groceries and have each meal planned out we are less likely to choose unhealthy and often more expensive food. Inevitably, meal planning takes a back seat to our chaotic schedules. 

I read an article that I found absolutely fascinating awhile back, 13 Things You Should Give Up If You Want To Be Successful,that suggested in addition to eating healthy and working out sleep should be a priority. Many of us want to exercise and eat right but choose to work long hours or take extra time to “decompress” at night which cuts into our sleep. Arianna Huffington even suggests in her Ted Talk, that sleep is the number one tool for success. The CEO of Netflix, Reed Hastings was even quoted saying “We’re competing with sleep,” according to the Independent. My point here is that higher ups in business seem to understand how important sleep is and how likely we are to put it on the back burner.
If we prioritize sleep, we will have time in the mornings for an early morning run or workout before the distraction of kids or work. We will make time for reading the bible or meditating. This will put us in a better mental state for the day ahead. We will need less caffeine. We will lose weight with more sleep. Seriously. And if we wake up rejuvenated and ready for a workout we can kick start our metabolism for the day. If you want to truly take care of yourself and make a resolution for 2019, it starts with sleep. Once you’ve developed a sleep habit, start looking for healthier foods, then throw in some exercise. It doesn’t have to be all at once, and it doesn’t have to incredibly challenging. We do set ourselves up for failure though, if you think about it. Staying up until midnight to ring in the New Year, then we can be tired, and sleep deprived for day one of the 365 in the new year.

I’m not saying don’t stay up and celebrate. I’m just saying make a note of that and sleep-in if at all possible or plan on going to be early the next night. Have a safe and Happy New Year and I look forward to talking more about self-care as this series of posts will continue into 2019!
